The Changing Society of the Middle Ages in The Wife of Bath When the Middle Ages began, society was divided into a rigid class system. But by the time Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, the world was changing rapidly. A new social mobility was granted, and the middle or working class was created. Before this, women were ignored and often blamed for the plights of their society, and the new social mobility opened many new doors for women. Women, whom for years were starved for control and influence in their world, suddenly could exercise power over their husbands and other men. Interpretations of the story of Adam and Eve tended towards an unfavorable view of woman and these interpretations helped the church men of the Middle Ages formulate their views (Lucas 3). As the church developed, regulations regardin g marriage under [...] under church law gave women a subservient place, overseen first by fathers or guardians and then by husbands (Lucas 10). Women always had to be monitored for their behavior. But when women began taking the upper hand in their homes, they escaped the watchful eyes of their husbands and fathers, and realized how much they enjoyed sovereignty and freedom. According to the Wife of Bath, women do love the best to be quite free to do [their] own behest (Chaucer 429). Unfortunately for them, men did not have much say in this new domestic revolution. Regarding men, Alison simply states women love no man that guards [them] or gives charge of where [they] go (Chaucer 321). In the Middle Ages, the church tried to campaign against marriage. The church leaders even devised stories of evil, abusive husbands, in hopes of driving young girls to become nuns. In A farewell to Arms, as the title is indicative the novel deals with the process by which the Protagonist Frederic Henry removes himself from it and leaves it behind. The novel contains unparalleled descriptions of the brutality and meaningless ness of war without the romanticism associated with the regular genre of War novels. The scenes dealing with the retreat of the Italian Army, where along with the loss of columns of soldiers, there is a general loss of moral judgment and nerves. The moral ambiguity of Henry shooting the engineer for refusing to help free the car is a symbol of the inexplicable escalation of violence (more in the mind, where it originates) and the disorder of the war. The game of Love that Henry and Catherine begin as a distraction from their respective pains and troubles, Henry to detach himself from the troubling reality of a meaningless war and Catherine to put the loss of her Fiance behind her are symbolic of the emotional bankruptcy that is the results of turbulent times. Soon their Love turns from a distraction to the very core of their being. Henry’s understanding of the strength of his love for Catherine helps him over reach the empty ideals of honor in a war that never belonged to him. This enables him to flee the war and seek her out and they plan an idyllic life that is meant to be a salve for both their troubled life. However, the tragedy of the novel rests in the fact that in a world plagued by problems that are mostly unexplained and incomprehensible, even true love can only be temporary. The most convincing expression of tragedy comes when Henry says â€Å"If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places† In the Sun also Rises, the entire overwhelming aimless ness of a whole generation who never seem to take their lives, emotions, love or goals, as anything important is the all-pervading theme. Though Hemingway never explicitly mentions the aimless ness, it is for all to sense in the way each of the character tries to fill hi/her days with drinking, dancing and debauchery as though they were the very essence on which their existence hinged. The novel also deals in symbols and through technique, the confusion over the entire idea of Masculinity. The ambiguity brought about by the World War where against the common perceptions of men, soldiers were required to huddle in trenches and pray more for luck than anything else was totally against the masculinity the world had understood till then. In making clear through subtle conversations that Jake is rendered impotent by the war, Hemingway also goes ahead and picturizes the other characters be it the womanizing Cohen, Drunkard Mike or Bill in ways that do not convey the masculinity associated with them. â€Å"I can’t stand it to think my life is going so fast and I’m not really living it. † Says Cohen in a sudden moment of clarity, which pretty much seems to sum up his entire generation. The motifs in The Farewell to arms are Masculinity, Games and divertissement in relations and loyalty versus abandonment. Where as in The Sun also Rises, he deals primarily with lack of communication (no primary character, unless either drunk or in an extremely painful situation ever conducts a communicating conversation, preferring to brood and languish in the non-comprehension. ), Excessive drinking and False Friendships. Rain is a powerful symbol for pain and loneliness and helplessness in The Farewell to arms where as in The Sun also Rises it is the Bullfighting that is a poignant symbol of masculinity, the romanticism inextricably attached to cruelty. It is pertinent to note that the Personal life of Ernest Hemingway seeps through most of his novels, his beliefs, his confusions in life, his pain and suffering and his compromises or the lack of them. One can see and speculate on the Hunter, the fond Fisherman, soldier and reporter and the writers who populate his novels as depictions of the various stages of Hemingway’s life. There is rarely another write in American Literature who can justifiably lay claim to have seen, touched and felt about most circumstances that he is writing about (or in Hemingway’s case indicating but omitting). Hemingway lived the life of several of his protagonists and many who read his biography rarely come up with a question as to why he had to commit suicide. A person who lived life mostly on his won terms and felt so deeply for human suffering in times of turbulence, and clung on to a value system he wanted to survive in spite of the vagaries of the war, could not have possibly let fate decide his end. Sherlock Holmes Essay When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, he had no idea that his creation would become on of the most read and talked about fiction characters ever. Doyle himself did not even think that the Sherlock Holmes stories were good literature, but as he found out, people were not interested in the quality of his writing but rather being entertained by the worlds most famous detective. Holmes was created in March 1886 but was not introduced to the public until November 1887 due to lack of funding for his stories. He first appeared in A Study of a Scarlet which was printed as part of a magazine called Beetons Christmas Annual. The public was also introduced to Holmes colleague and biographer, Dr Watson. The Victorian public was fascinated by sensational crime and Holmes himself was described as having an immense knowledge of sensational literature. There was a great popularity in late-Victorian London for dismembering murder victims and distributing them around the town. One particular audacious murderer travelled in horse-drawn cabs with the head of his victim on his lap (wrapped in a napkin ), but gave himself away when he payed double the fare when he was told that it was sixpence a head. This was also about the time of the Jack the Ripper murders in which people were afraid to step out of their homes. The Jack the Ripper case was never solved and there was much controversy associated with the police investigation. The public had lost some of its faith in the police force and was looking for a figure of hope and inspiration. The selection criteria were short: Someone who always got his man. The only one who fitted this description was Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes was not only the worlds greatest detective, but he also lived in London. He was someone close to home and a man well steeped in Victorian traditions. Holmes was just like any other Englishman at the time. He read their newspapers, travelled in their carriages and even experimented with some of the drugs of the time. It is not hard to see why the Victorian public adopted him as one of their own. The Victorian public had fallen in love with Holmes and his great mysteries and it was no wonder that they were upset in the summer of 1892 when Sir Auther Conan Doyle decided to kill off what he called a lower stratum of literary achievement. City gentlemen wore black arm bands and Doyle received threats and letters of abuse. This was an indication that the people no longer regarded Holmes as just a character but much more. He was a reflection of the hopes of a generation. It was not until 1901 that Doyle had a change of heart and decided to write more Holmes mysteries. The initial result of Doyles change of heart was one of the greatest Holmes mysteries ever written, The Hound of the Baskervilles. It was here that the Holmes phenomenon reached its early peak. Queues of fans would wait outside the Strand Magazine office in London on a monthly basis to get their next dose of Holmes. It was like a drug people could not get enough of. In America alone, the print run of the magazine was increased by nearly 200,000 copies. Doyle not only captured a generations imagination but also transformed the way people thought. At the turn of the century, people began to look to science for more and more answers. Holmes was at the forefront of this new way of thinking. Doyle himself actually created finger print forensic science as we know it today. He said that no two people have exactly the same finger prints. Holmes used this science to assist him in many of his cases. Doyle not only bought science to crime solving but a new logic. The logic of looking for clues and associating them with the most likely source.
